Mindfulness course for women of colour

This 8-week mindfulness course is for women of colour who wish to learn the foundations of mindfulness, and heal from past and current forms of oppression. This introductory course help you learn to be comfortable in your own skin, self-regulate, develop self-determination and affirm the sense of belonging. You will learn self-regulation tools that you can apply straight away in your daily life and will be able to quickly call on inner-resources as you feel triggered in order to respond to difficult experiences with more strength, strengthen mind-body-heart connection and improve your wellbeing through self-awareness.

The objective of this course is to support you in developing self-awareness and self-reflection capacities to grow the sense of belonging, and cultivate an abundance of inner-resources to cope with the ever present oppression.

Each session is 1 hour 15 minutes long and held a week apart from each other. We meet in group and start with an introduction to the class’ topic, discussions in group and a guided practice. You will also be provided with guided meditations to practice at home. It is highly recommended that you attend all the sessions and maintain a daily meditation practice as recommended during these 8 weeks.

CLASS 1

Embodied awareness of the present moment

Introduction to what mindfulness is, bringing kindness and care to every experience. We learn how to sustain attention to the present with the use of an anchor and develop the muscle of mindfulness.

CLASS 2

Coming home to the body

Connecting with the body and developing appreciation and gratitude for it. Working within our window of tolerance and tools to strengthen your inner-resources.

CLASS 3

The train of thoughts

Learning to recognize and work with difficult thoughts and sensations, oppressive and discriminative thoughts and how they are linked to our bodies. This week, we will learn self-regulation techniques with some breathworks and grounding tools.

CLASS 4

Self-regulation

Learning to recognize when the nervous system is hijacked, in heightened states of anxiety or overwhelmed with grounding practices to self-regulate. We learn more tools to grow inner-resources.

CLASS 5

Becoming our best allies

We learn the concepts of loving kindness, self-compassion and how to gradually grow trust in ourselves, being comfortable with our own skins and developing an unshakable inner-confidence.

CLASS 6

We are not separate

As we strengthen our inner-resources and our capacity to care for ourselves, we expand our circle of compassion to include others and recognize that we are not separate.

CLASS 7

Forgiveness

Forgiveness takes the longest time but it is also very powerful for healing. We cultivate the intention to be forgiving toward ourselves and others, how we can develop patience and courage in order to lift the burden from past hurts.

CLASS 8

We are part of it all

When we feel under attack, our primary intention is to take care of ourselves and we forget that we are all interconnected. What we do has a ripple effect on to others and we thrive as human beings when we are with others. We reaffirm our sense of belonging to something larger.
